However, if you are interested in pursuing a professional dancing career, then going to a dance school will help prepare you and help you reach your goal. The level of education and training required to become a dancer varies with the types of dance they want to specialize in, however, all professional dancers go through many years of formal training.
Most professional dancers begin their training quite young and continue their training throughout their dancing careers. Kids between the ages of 5 and 8 (for girls) begin taking ballet classes, and their training becomes more intensive as they enter teenage years. Most ballet dancers begin professional careers by age 18.
Hip-hop, modern, or jazz dancers usually begin formal training while in high school, attending dance programs after school hours, or summer programs in between the academic years.
If you want to pursue a career as a choreographer someday, you will most likely require postsecondary education. Dance courses are offered through Theater or Fine Arts departments by many colleges and universities in the bachelor’s and/or master’s level.
You may also be able to find work as a dance teacher in college, high school or grade school, as well as in dance studios, but these typically prefer instructors who have a degree. Some may accept previous work in lieu of a degree.
How to Find Dance Classes Near You
Once you have made your decision to take dance classes, you will need to learn about the different styles of dance. There are literally hundreds of types of dance, such as ballet, jazz dancing, hip hop dancing, tap dancing, modern dance, belly dancing, Latin dance, flamenco dance, and folk dance, to name a few. The best way to learn which one you like the most is to try different styles out.
While you may want to concentrate on a particular kind of dance, it would be a good idea to explore other dance forms. If you are a ballet dancer, you may want to try taking jazz dance classes or hip hop dance classes, or vice versa. This will be helpful in cases when the choreography for a particular job you will be auditioning for includes various dance styles. Even if you were flawless for the jazz part of the choreography, if your hip hop dancing is not up to par, you may very well be rejected for the job.
The next thing you need to do is to find nearby dance classes, which may be offered by your school, church, or a community center. If you’re lucky, you may even find a dance studio in your area. You can begin your dance training through these avenues, and when you become advanced enough, you can start exploring professional dance schools in which to continue your training.
